Where is the data stored in a Sharepoint List

Where is the data stored in a Sharepoint List

In Microsoft Sharepoint 2003, when a user inputs data into a List, where is that data stored? I know our Sharepoint has a SQL backend, but I think that is mainly for application configuration, and not for data storage.



Is the data stored in XML files, or somewhere else.
